Lawn Aeration

Lawn Aeration is Vital in Establishing a Healthy Lawn with a Good Root System.

Why Aeration?

Did you know that 90% of the grass plant is roots and they need Oxygen, Water and Nutrients to survive.  Compacted and clay soils restrict the movements of these to the roots. Leaving your lawn weak, thin and prone to stress and diseases. By aerating you are opening of the soil, allowing the oxygen, water and nutrients to get down to the roots. Which will build a strong root system and give you a thick, lush lawn.

What is Core Aeration?

Core aeration is done with a machine that has hollow metal tubes, which  pull cores of soil out of your lawn. The cores are about 3/4 inch in diameter and 2 to 3 inches long.

In order to get enough cores pulled out (approx. 3 in apart) of your lawn we have to go over it two or three times.

Yes it does leave the lawn unsightly for awhile, but as the cores dry they will break down and after a week or so be gone.

How Often Should you Aerate

This depends on the type of grass you have, your soil conditions and the traffic your lawn gets. If you have cool season grass with clay soil and/or a high traffic lawn you should aerate 2 times per year.

If your lawn has not been aerated yearly, you should have it aerated 2 times the first year. Most other soils and grasses can be aerated once per year.
The benefits of lawn aeration are soon lost if you discontinue this yearly practice.

When to Core Aerate

Cool Season Grasses : Should be done in March, April or September and October.
Warm Season Grasses : Best in late May through July.

Summary of the Benefits of Core Aeration

  • Loosens Compacted Soils
  • Reduces Thatch
  • Helps Water and Nutrients get into the soil
  • Increases Oxygen supply that the roots need
  • Releases Carbon Dioxide
  • Promotes New and Deeper Root Growth
